Amid escalating tensions with Iran, senior Democratic leaders are urging President Donald Trump to cease military operations following the deaths of three U.S. service members in recent incidents in Jordan and Iraq. The Pentagon has identified two of the soldiers who were killed in a strike at the Muwaffaq Salti air base in Jordan as First Lieutenant Tyler James Feehan, 25, from Hawaii, and Private Isabella Gonzales, 19, from Texas. Meanwhile, another service member perished in northern Iraq during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance, and authorities are probing the discovery of what could be a fourth victim’s remains in Jordan.
This surge in hostilities comes as U.S. forces have launched a tenth consecutive series of strikes against Iranian targets. In response, Iran has pledged to retaliate against regional allies backing American military efforts. Democrats have been vocal in their condemnation of Trump’s approach, with Senator Chris Murphy highlighting the rapidly worsening situation. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries has criticized the military campaign as a costly and unnecessary conflict that endangers U.S. troops. Calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities have been echoed by several Democratic senators, including Mark Warner and Chris Van Hollen, who are advocating for the administration to obtain congressional approval for any further military actions. Senator Jeanne Shaheen has also emphasized the need for renewed diplomatic efforts to address the crisis.
Congress has previously passed war powers resolutions to restrict the president’s ability to continue military operations without legislative consent. However, the White House maintains that the legal requirement for congressional authorization has not been met due to an earlier ceasefire. This conflict, which reignited earlier this year, has already resulted in at least 17 U.S. military fatalities, while Iranian civilian casualties are estimated to exceed 1,700.
Despite the growing opposition from Democrats, Republican leaders have largely supported Trump’s military strategy, asserting that such actions are crucial to counter Iranian threats and protect U.S. interests in the region.
