Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has voiced strong criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to pause the implementation of new sanctions against Russia. Zelenskyy warns that this move could potentially embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin, escalating the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He emphasized the importance of maintaining economic pressure on Moscow to support international efforts aimed at resolving the war.
The proposed sanctions, which have been put on hold for 60 days, target Russia’s energy sector, financial institutions, and oil transportation networks. They also include tariffs of up to 100% on Russian oil imports, affecting countries like China and India. The suspension is intended to allow the U.S. administration to examine the potential economic impacts of these measures.
Meanwhile, Russia continues its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, raising alarms over possible electricity shortages and the safeguarding of essential services as winter approaches. Zelenskyy has called for additional international assistance to bolster Ukraine’s air defense systems to protect civilians from these ongoing threats.
Concerns about the operational reliability of Starlink satellite internet services, used by Ukrainian forces, have also been raised by Zelenskyy. He warned that any disruptions to these services could impact critical military operations.
This situation underscores the ongoing disagreements between Washington and Kyiv regarding sanctions, military support, and strategies to end the conflict. Zelenskyy remains firm that continuous economic and military pressure on Russia is crucial for achieving a sustainable peace in the region.
