A new initiative aimed at advancing Selma into an economically robust and innovative future has been unveiled through a collaboration among the Selma Housing Authority, Metro Digital Group, and a coalition of educational and civic leaders. The Selma Digital Innovation Center will revitalize a historic site at 528 Washington Avenue, transforming it into a hub for workforce development, entrepreneurship, and digital innovation. This center will target students, young adults, entrepreneurs, and the wider community, providing resources in technology, AI, and the creator economy.

Collins Pettaway Jr., President of Progress Partners for Selma, emphasized that the project transcends mere building redevelopment. “We are creating future opportunity infrastructure for our community. Technology is rapidly changing the workforce, and Selma must position itself to compete and thrive in a modern digital economy,” he stated. The initiative is backed by a robust public-private partnership that includes the Mayor’s Office, Selma City Schools, Selma University, Wallace Community College Selma, and other key stakeholders.

The center is envisioned to house a variety of facilities, including gaming and esports environments, creator and streaming studios, AI and STEM learning labs, and media production spaces. It will also feature workforce development classrooms and community event areas. Metro Digital Group will spearhead the development and ecosystem deployment of the project. Shaon Berry, President of Metro Digital Group, remarked on the project’s alignment with their mission to foster inclusive technology ecosystems, supporting long-term economic mobility and workforce readiness.

Local government and community leaders recognize the symbolic significance of this project as Selma continues its efforts to enhance economic development and educational opportunities. Councilwoman Lesia James noted the importance of collaborative partnerships in creating new opportunities for the city’s youth and residents. Progress Partners Vice President John Deamer underscored the initiative’s aim to broaden learning and career possibilities, catering to interests in technology, entrepreneurship, digital media, and more.

The Selma Digital Innovation Center is set to begin design and construction planning by June 2026, with an opening anticipated in 2027. Progress Partners and Metro Digital Group are actively seeking strategic partners, sponsors, and technology providers to support the project’s vision. Roger Blackmon, Director of Technology for Progress Partners, expressed enthusiasm for the advanced technology and dynamic learning environments planned for the center, highlighting its potential to excite learners of all ages and foster community learning. Established in 2025, Progress Partners for Selma drives initiatives in economic development, education, and community pride, with committed leadership from local and regional stakeholders.
