On the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung made a notable appeal to U.S. President Donald Trump, urging him to spearhead efforts to renew dialogue with North Korea concerning its nuclear program. This request was made during a brief exchange at the summit, where South Korea attended as a guest nation. President Lee urged Trump to utilize his distinctive diplomatic style, highlighting past direct engagements he had with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The backdrop of this appeal is a heightened focus on North Korea’s advancing nuclear and missile programs, which have grown alongside its strengthened relations with Moscow. Despite the high-profile meetings between Trump and Kim during Trump’s first term, these diplomatic initiatives did not yield a lasting agreement on denuclearization. The lack of progress has kept the issue at the forefront of regional security priorities.
Recently, Trump’s public mentions of his previous interactions with Kim have been perceived by some officials in Seoul as an indication of potential renewed interest in rekindling these diplomatic efforts. South Korea remains committed to fostering dialogue as a means of addressing the ongoing security challenges. Concurrently, it is enhancing defense collaborations with its allies to fortify regional security.
In addition to his interaction with Trump, President Lee also engaged with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the G7 Summit. Their discussion centered on defense cooperation and expanding security partnerships, underscoring South Korea’s active diplomatic engagement during the event. This reflects Seoul’s broader strategy of building stronger international alliances amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics.
