In an effort to reignite negotiations to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to consider resuming trilateral peace talks involving the United States, Russia, and Ukraine. This diplomatic push comes as Washington intensifies its efforts to broker a resolution to the war.
During a meeting held in St Petersburg, Witkoff presented fresh proposals aimed at ending the conflict and explored potential next steps towards a negotiated settlement. This meeting marked Witkoff’s ninth in-person encounter with Putin. Additionally, Putin expressed his openness to collaborate with US President Donald Trump on other global issues, such as Iran’s nuclear program, and floated the idea of a future meeting with Trump in China, potentially involving Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Witkoff’s diplomatic efforts followed his meeting in Oslo with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as Finnish and Norwegian leaders, and representatives from Europe and NATO. The discussions focused on creating a unified strategy for engaging with Russia and identifying possible components of a comprehensive peace agreement. Key issues at the forefront included security assurances for Ukraine, postwar economic recovery, and the future of Europe’s security framework.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has shown optimism for a trilateral meeting with Trump and Putin to tackle the primary barriers to peace. However, the Kremlin has maintained that any direct meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy would necessitate thorough preparation to ensure meaningful progress.
The recent diplomatic activities underscore renewed attempts by Washington to bring the involved parties back to the negotiating table, although formidable challenges persist in crafting an agreement that would satisfy all sides involved.
