In a bid to enhance energy resilience and optimize the use of renewable resources, the U.S. Department of Energy has granted final funding approval for an innovative energy storage project in Michigan. This development paves the way for the installation of a cutting-edge battery energy system at the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy’s (GTRLC) headquarters in Traverse City.
The project, spearheaded by Advanced Battery Concepts (ABC), is set to integrate a 1.15 MW battery energy storage system with GTRLC’s existing 185 kW solar photovoltaic installation. This system will capture and store electricity produced by the solar array, ensuring that energy is available when needed, thereby bolstering energy security and sustainability.
Financed through Congressionally Directed Spending, the initiative leverages ABC’s proprietary GreenSeal® bipolar lead battery technology. This technology promises a reduced lead usage compared to traditional lead batteries while maintaining the safety and recyclability inherent in lead-based chemistries. The batteries, which are designed and manufactured in Michigan, underscore the state’s significant role in the national energy storage supply chain.
The project marks a significant milestone as it transitions to the procurement and manufacturing phase, with installation and commissioning of the system expected by the second quarter of 2027. The advanced energy storage system will be housed in three commercial-scale BOX-BE™ enclosures, showcasing the latest in sustainable energy technology.
By supporting the GTRLC project, the U.S. Department of Energy is not only facilitating the implementation of cutting-edge battery storage solutions but is also contributing to the broader goals of energy efficiency and renewable energy integration. This initiative highlights the potential for sustainable energy practices to enhance local energy infrastructure and resilience.
