Under the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico is revitalizing its security collaboration with the United States, mending ties that were previously strained during the tenure of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Key to this renewed partnership is Omar García Harfuch, the Security Cabinet coordinator, who has been actively engaging with senior U.S. officials to enhance intelligence sharing and combat organized crime. Mexican authorities claim that the quicker exchange of information has significantly improved their ability to address criminal activities promptly.
Since Sheinbaum took office, Mexico has reported substantial achievements in law enforcement, including thousands of arrests, significant seizures of weapons and drugs, and the dismantling of numerous clandestine drug labs. Additionally, Mexico has expedited the extradition of prominent criminal suspects to the United States and observed a marked reduction in fentanyl trafficking. This shift in cooperation highlights a distinct departure from the previous administration, which had severed a U.S. intelligence unit’s operations in Mexico and imposed stricter controls on foreign security agents.
The relationship between the two nations had further deteriorated after the 2020 apprehension of former Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos, alongside disputes over organized crime investigations. Tensions escalated in 2024 when allegations surfaced linking drug-trafficking funds to López Obrador’s 2006 presidential campaign. Although these claims did not lead to formal charges, they exacerbated the mistrust between the Mexican government and U.S. authorities.
Despite the progress in restoring bilateral cooperation, President Sheinbaum has consistently emphasized Mexico’s sovereignty and the necessity for mutual respect in international relations. Her administration has voiced concerns over perceived attempts by U.S. officials to influence or create divisions within Mexico’s security framework. Consequently, while both countries aim to enhance cooperation against organized crime, Mexico remains firm that any intelligence collaboration must align with its national sovereignty and interests.
