Amid rising security concerns, Taiwan and the United States are intensifying their collaboration in the defense industry, focusing on increasing investments and integrating supply chains more deeply. At the Taiwan-US Defense Industry Forum held in Taipei, retired US Army General Charles Flynn commended Taiwan’s initiatives to enhance defense expenditure, modernize military capabilities, and incorporate cutting-edge technologies. He emphasized that Taiwan’s heightened investment levels signal a robust dedication to safeguarding its security and sovereignty.
The forum, attracting its largest-ever US delegation with 41 representatives, highlighted a growing interest from American defense firms in Taiwan’s defense sector. Flynn noted that the increasing number of participating companies underscores not only expanding business prospects but also the urgency prompted by regional security threats. This burgeoning interest reflects a shift towards broader strategic industrial partnerships beyond traditional arms sales, as articulated by Taiwan External Trade Development Council Chairman James Huang. He highlighted Taiwan’s prowess in semiconductors, information and communications technology, and low-Earth-orbit satellite systems, which can support defense applications like drones, AI-enabled systems, and secure communications.
Huang further pointed out that Taiwan’s manufacturing expertise and system integration capabilities are well-suited to complement advanced US defense technologies, opening up significant collaborative opportunities. This sentiment was echoed by US-Taiwan Business Council President Rupert Hammond-Chambers, who stated that the cooperation aims not only to fulfill Taiwan’s defense requirements but also to bolster wider global supply chains. He described the synergy between US defense innovation and Taiwan’s tech sector as a solid foundation for cultivating a competitive defense industry ecosystem.
Moreover, Taiwan’s engagement in defense cooperation is extending to European partners. This month, representatives from Ukraine, Poland, and the Czech Republic visited Taiwan to explore defense technology collaborations and future reconstruction opportunities, particularly in the drone and information technology sectors. Officials indicate that these expanding partnerships are part of broader efforts to enhance defense supply chain resilience and strengthen technological cooperation in response to shifting geopolitical dynamics.
